The administration of HiSET testing has been discontinued in the State of New Jersey effective 5/31/23. GED testing coming to UCNJ soon.
In the state of NJ there are two types of High School Equivalency Assessments: GED and HiSET. UCNJ administers the HiSET High School Equivalency Assessment offered through PSI in ENGLISH only.
HiSET at UCNJ
The HiSET test has five sections:
- Language Arts-Reading: 65 minutes in English
- Language Arts-Writing: 120 minutes (includes an essay)
- Mathematics: 90 minutes
- Science: 80 minutes
- Social Studies: 70 minutes

Scheduling Your HiSET® Exam
There are three basic steps you need to take to schedule your HiSET exam:
- Set up your My HiSET Account.
- Find a physical test center near you.
- Schedule your appointment.

To take the HiSET exam in the state of New Jersey, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

You must be 18 years old to take the test without meeting special conditions. If you are 16–17 years old, the “Consent to Participate” form on the link below must be completed and signed by your parent or legal guardian stating that they give permission for you to take the test and they understand that by doing this, they are taking you out of the public school system. Your parent or legal guardian must accompany you when you bring this form to the test center, or, if they cannot attend, it must be notarized by a New Jersey notary. This form must be completed and submitted to the test center prior to scheduling any subtest. -

Acceptable forms of identification include:- Government issued driver’s license, temporary license, or permit

ID must have test taker’s name as given when testing appointment was made with recent, recognizable photo of test taker. Test taker’s signature.

Do you require testing accommodations?
If you have a disability or health-related need and you require testing accommodations, you need to call ETS Disability Services at 1-800-367-1565 x 6750 to schedule, reschedule or cancel your appointment.

Do I need to have a HiSET account to schedule and pay for my test?
Yes, create your MyHiSET account before you try to schedule your test.

What is the cost and how can I pay for the tests?
The fee for each subtest is $20.75 ($10.75 ETS fee and $10 test center fee). You will receive two retests per subject; you must pay the $10 test center fee for each of these retests.
All testing fees must be paid online at the time you schedule your test. UC does not accept payment of any kind on-site. Online payments may be made using credit cards, debit cards or PayPal.

When do you give the test?
Available test dates and times can be found online through your My HiSET account.

Can I take the whole test in one day?
No, the UCNJ Testing Center can only schedule up to three sub-tests on a given day.

If something happens on test day, can I get a refund?
If you cancel at any time up until 11:59 p.m. local time the day before your scheduled appointment, you are entitled to a refund of your $10.75 ETS fee. If you miss a test or arrive too late to take your test, you are not entitled to a refund. The $10 test fee is non-refundable.

I’ve already passed some of the sections with another test. Can I take HiSET for just the sections I need?
Yes, the State of New Jersey allows you to “mix and match” the test sections from any of the approved tests.

When will I get my diploma?
High School Equivalency Diplomas are issued from the State of New Jersey. It takes anywhere from five (5) to seven (7) business days for new test results to be received by the State from the Test Vendor, and another three (3) to five (5) days to process and mail the diploma and transcript. If you know that you have passed your test and have not received your diploma, you must contact the State within six (6) months. The State will not issue another diploma beyond that timeframe.

I lost my diploma. Can I get another one?
No, the State does not issue duplicate diplomas. Instead, they will provide official verification that the test is passed. Go to the NJ Adult Education webpage for information.
